Hi I’m Enzo! My sister Daniella and I take photos on Oahu, Hawaii of families, and especially love maternity sessions. This glowing mom-to-be and her partner had a session in the Kualoa area of north shore on their Oahu babymoon for maternity photos.

This area is one of our absolute favorites because of how versatile it is. There are so many places for gorgeous photos with varying backgrounds. We love taking some in front of the mountains, then walking a short distance to a calm beach to take some there too. The iconic Mokoli’i island can be seen by beach across the water, which is a unique feature of this location.
What is best to wear to your maternity photo session?
One of the things that can make or break maternity photos is what you wear. The right outfits don’t need to be complicated. They should feel comfortable, intentional, and work with the environment around you.
For sessions in the Kualoa area, we usually recommend soft, neutral tones. Colors like cream, beige, dusty blue, and pinks blend beautifully with the mountains and ocean without competing with them. These tones also tend to photograph well in Hawaii’s strong natural light.

For moms-to-be, long, flowy dresses are almost always a great choice. They help highlight the bump in a natural way and move beautifully with the ocean breeze. Solid colors or very subtle patterns usually work best. If you want something a little more dramatic, dresses with movement—like chiffon or lightweight cotton—add a lot without feeling overdone.
Partners do best in simple, coordinated outfits rather than matching exactly. Think light linen shirts, neutral t-shirts, or soft button-downs paired with chinos or shorts in earth tones. The goal is to complement and not be too matchy-matchy.

Barefoot is often our favorite for beach portions of the session. It keeps everything feeling natural and relaxed, especially when walking along the shoreline or sitting near the water.
When in my pregnancy should I take photos?
If you’re planning your maternity session, timing also matters. Most families feel best photographing between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the bump is usually nicely visible, but mom is still comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy the session without feeling too heavy.

We also always recommend bringing one “extra” outfit option if you’re unsure. Sometimes the wind, lighting, or mood of the location will naturally guide what feels right once you’re there.
Overall, the best outfits are the ones you feel like yourself in. When you’re comfortable, the photos naturally feel more relaxed, connected, and real.
